Mice don’t wait for an invitation
Every fall in southwest Michigan, the nights cool off, fields get harvested, and mice start looking for somewhere warm. A house mouse can squeeze through a gap about the size of a dime. Gaps around pipes, garage door seals, dryer vents and foundation cracks are all it takes. Once they’re in, they breed fast, chew wiring and insulation, and contaminate food and storage areas.
Johnson Pest Control treats mice and rats as part of our regular service, not as an expensive add-on. Rodent treatment is included in every general pest control plan, inside and out.
Signs you have mice or rats
- Droppings in drawers, cabinets, along baseboards or in the garage
- Scratching in walls or ceilings at night
- Chewed food packaging, insulation or wiring
- Nesting material (shredded paper, fabric or insulation) in storage boxes
- Pets staring at or pawing one spot on the wall
How we control rodents, season by season
Our year-round plans are built around when rodents are most active here:
- Spring (March-May): rodent treatments applied as needed while we take care of early-season insects.
- Summer (May-August): rodent treatments as needed.
- Fall (August-November): rodent treatment becomes very important as mice start moving indoors.
- Winter (November-March): our most important visit of the year, because rodent pressure is at its highest.
What we use for mice and rats
- Tin Cat multi-catch traps: low-profile traps that can catch more than one mouse between visits.
- Vitamin D-based baits: we consider these a safer option than many traditional rodent baits.
- Conventional rodent products when the situation calls for them.
We pick the mix for your home based on where the activity is and who lives there. Rodent baits of any kind should always be kept away from children and pets, so tell us about your household when you call.

Scheduling: on every plan, the first two visits are two weeks apart.

Chipmunks: no extra charge on Gold, add $15 a visit on Silver, add $25 a visit on Bronze.
For an active infestation, Gold or Silver is the better choice. Bronze is best for long-term maintenance. See all prices on our pricing page.
Rats, shrews and ground squirrels
Rats, shrews and ground squirrels are covered too. For chipmunks and ground squirrels tunneling in the yard, see our mole, chipmunk and squirrel service. Squirrels in the attic are handled through wildlife removal.

General pest control (including rodents) comes with a 30-day re-treat guarantee: if you’re not satisfied with the results, we come back and re-treat at no charge. See our guarantee and price-beating policy.
Frequently asked questions
I’ve only seen one mouse. Do I really need service?
Mice are rarely alone, and a single sighting in fall usually means more are moving in. A phone consultation is free, so call and we’ll help you decide.
Is rodent control safe around my kids and pets?
Tell us about your kids and pets when you call, and we’ll talk through which options make sense for your home. Vitamin D-based baits are one of the safer options we use, but no rodent bait should be within reach of children or pets.
Can I get just rodent control without bug spraying?
Yes. Rodent-only service is $10 off per visit on Gold and Silver and $15 off on Bronze.
When is the best time to start?
Late summer or early fall, before mice move in for the winter. You can start in any season.
