When the first cold nights hit Southwest Michigan, a lot of local pests start looking for somewhere warm to spend the winter. For many homes in Portage, Kalamazoo, Texas Township and Oshtemo, that somewhere is your attic, walls or basement. October is the month we get the most calls about mice, stink bugs and lady beetles, and it’s also the best month to stop them before they settle in.
The usual fall invaders
House mice. As fields are harvested and temperatures drop, mice move toward buildings for food and shelter. A mouse can squeeze through a gap about the size of a dime, so small openings around pipes, garage doors and foundation vents are enough. Signs to watch for: droppings in cupboards or along basement walls, chewed food packaging, and scratching noises in walls at night.
Brown marmorated stink bugs. These shield-shaped bugs gather on sunny south- and west-facing walls on warm fall afternoons, then crawl into cracks around windows, siding and soffits. They don’t bite or damage the house, but they smell when crushed and can show up by the dozens on warm winter days.
Asian lady beetles and boxelder bugs. Like stink bugs, they cluster on the sunny side of the house and work their way inside to overwinter. Lady beetles can leave yellow stains and an odor when disturbed.
What you can do this month
- Seal the outside first. Caulk gaps around window and door frames, add or replace door sweeps, and fill gaps where pipes, wires and dryer vents enter the house. Use steel wool or copper mesh behind sealant for mouse-sized holes.
- Check screens and vents. Repair torn window screens and make sure attic and soffit vents have intact screening.
- Store firewood and birdseed away from the house. Both attract mice. Keep firewood stacked off the ground and at least 20 feet from the foundation if you can.
- Don’t crush stink bugs. Vacuum them up instead and empty the bag outside.
- Clean up crumbs and pet food. Store pantry food and pet food in sealed containers, especially in garages and basements.
How Johnson Pest Control handles fall pests
We’re a local, family-run company based in Portage, and our program is built around organic products and exclusion, meaning we find and seal the places pests get in instead of just spraying. A fall perimeter treatment plus sealing the main entry points goes a long way toward a quiet winter. If mice are already inside, we’ll set up a plan to remove them and close up the gaps so new ones don’t follow.
